The UPSC Civil Services Examination is an exceptionally competitive test in India led by the  Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) every year. It is a cross-country examination for eligible candidates for different Civil Services like the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and Indian Police Service (IPS) among others. The examination is led in three phases: Preliminary, Main, and Interview.

The UPSC Civil Services Examination is widely considered to be one of the toughest exams in India due to its high level of competition and rigorous evaluation process. The examination tests a candidate's knowledge, skills, and aptitude across a wide range of subjects and requires extensive preparation and hard work.

The UPSC Civil Services Examination Syllabus consists of two stages:

Preliminary Examination:

Paper 1: General Studies (GS) - Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society, Indian Polity and Governance, Economic and Social Development, Environmental Ecology, Biodiversity, Climate Change, and General Issues on Environmental Ecology.

Paper 2: Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) - Comprehension, Interpersonal skills including communication skills, Logical reasoning, and analytical ability, Decision making and problem-solving, General mental ability, Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency, etc.).

Main Examination:

Paper A: One of the Indian languages selected by the candidate from the languages included in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution.

Paper B: English

Paper 1 to Paper 7: Seven papers of Essay, General Studies, and Optional Subject (to be selected by the candidate from the list of subjects notified by the Commission).

Preliminary Examination:

• The preliminary examination is a multiple-choice question (MCQ) format examination.
• The examination consists of two papers, each paper carrying a maximum of 200 marks.
• The total marks of the preliminary examination are 400.
• The duration of each paper is 2 hours.
• The marks obtained in the preliminary examination do not count towards the final total, and the examination is only a screening test.

Main Examination:

• The main examination is a written examination consisting of 9 papers.
• Seven papers are of conventional essay type and two papers are of language (qualifying in nature).
• The total marks of the main examination are 1750.
• The duration of each paper is 3 hours.
• The marks obtained in the main examination are considered for the final selection.
• Interview/Personality Test:
• The interview is the final stage of the examination process.
• The interview carries a maximum of 275 marks.
• The interview is conducted to assess the personal suitability of a candidate for a career in Civil Services.
• The interview marks are added to the marks obtained in the Main Examination to determine the final ranking.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA For UPSC EXAM 2023

• Nationality: A candidate must be a citizen of India to appear for the examination.
• Age Limit: A candidate must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 32 years on 1st August of the year in which he/she is appearing for the examination. Relaxations in the upper age limit are provided for certain categories as per the Government of India's rules.
• Educational Qualification: A candidate must have a degree from a recognized university in any discipline. Final-year students of degree courses can also appear for the examination, provided they have completed their degree before the date of the Main Examination.
• Number of Attempts: The number of attempts a candidate can make to appear for the examination is capped based on their category. Relaxations are provided for certain categories as per the Government of India's rules.
• Physical Standards: A candidate must meet the physical standards specified by the Government of India for the various services.
